Pocket Gardens

Monday, December 18th, 2006

I ran across Potting Shed Creations from another blog.. I cannot remember which one else I would link it! Anyway, I love the concept, particularly since I have no yarn anymore but one very sunny porch-type-thing out back and one box out front.

So, I officially have a small garden. I was thinking about doing an “herbal tea” garden for Boo next year, much like the Herbal Tea Pocket Garden kit that they have — except I want different herbs :) But I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Salsa Garden.

I also like the Gardens in a Bag — might be handy for my very sad window with no plants in it. In fact, I love many of their seed kits. If I can’t be arsed to put together my own I will probably buy one (or something similar) in the spring.

Things that make cards more complicated

Monday, December 11th, 2006

I have just finished addressing the second to last batch of Christmas cards. Second to last, because I still need to make a few more to finish off the list!

However, I have learned something. Some things make cards more complicated to send. Some things make them cost more than they otherwise would. For example, our picture cards have a little penguin and a bit of ribbon on them. Very cute. Very also makes the envelope a funny shape therefore they are .52 to send instead of .39. Dammit.

You would think I would have known this from the cards I made several years ago with buttons on them. Same problem. Apparently I do not, in fact, learn from my mistakes.

So, note to self: Do not choose mass batches of cards with things like ribbons, buttons, or anything 3D. Do not choose square envelopes. Do not choose anything with texture or an odd shape. Just save yourself the time, effort, and money, and stick with simplicity. The one off is fine. Christmas cards? Not so much!

Since I am so into natural cleaners, I ran across this blog entry on cleaning carpets without chemicals! Awesome!

I think I need an apron

Friday, October 6th, 2006

I just saw this post with the cutest apron in the world. Oddly I was thinking just the other day that perhaps I should get an apron. And I LOVE this pattern!

The thing is I never understood aprons. It’s not that I’m not messy, I am, it just never bothered me. Frankly I hardly remember to put a bib on my child unless there are tomatoes involved, and even then it’s usually after the first dollop has hit his chest. All of his shirts have stains of one variety or another.

But lately? Lately I’m thinking, How handy! Somewhere I can wipe my hands that won’t leave my trousers crusty. Something with pockets where I can stash snotty kleenexes and keep a washrag handy for those sudden and unfortunate events that require one. Something that might make my clothes wearable after all this baby business. That would be nice.

Plus, H’s mum wears an apron. It’s an official chef apron and it is always crips, clean and white (I don’t know how, she’s just immaculate when it comes to cooking). Very nice looking. Rather inspiring. I mean I DO cook these days.

I think I need an apron!

Edited to add: I think I have found a very similar pattern! It’s the Scalloped Apron from Paisley Pincushions! And it comes in extended sizes. SO made for me.

I need a voice recorder

Sunday, January 29th, 2006

Note to self… BUY VOICE RECORDER. I think it would be really useful to be able to make verbal notes to myself throughout the day. Much faster than writing them down (and I end up with notebooks scattered all over the damn house anyway). I think it would be cool to be able to play back the day, write down my notes, and actually get something done. I get to the end of the day and think, “I know there were some things I wanted to look up on the Internet tonight, but damned if I can remember what they were.” Must get voice recorder. Maybe Christmas next year, hint hint?

Carseat on the Airplane — yes or no?

Tuesday, December 27th, 2005

We’re starting to think about our trip to England next summer, and one of the questions, of course, is whether or not to bring Boo’s carseat.

I’m leaning towards bringing it. The main reason not to, of course, is money, but he will be quite close to two and highly unlikely to fall asleep on our laps. The sucker is BIG though and HEAVY. I have, however, found two options for carrying or wheeling it through the airport! 1) This nifty bag or 2) this nifty backpack. WIll have to see what style will suit us best.

The other reason to bring it, of course, is that we’ll likely be picked up by a car once we’re there!

Some other tips I’ve read about — board early, ask for a seatbelt extender to make it easier to install and uninstall, it can go in any seat as long as it doesn’t extend over the edge of the seat, know beforehand where the FAA approved sticker is, and flip the buckle upside down when installing (otherwise it’s pressed against the edge of the seat and hard to undo!).

How to check your email with a toddler

Give child brand spanking new toy. Ha! (Clearly unsustainable, but I live in the moment.)
