Contents of my hospital bag

I’ve finally admitted that I might want to prepare a bag to take to the hospital with me. I’ve been putting it off — I’ve been putting everything off! But now I’m nearly packed.

  • Birth Plan — believe it or not, my doctor encourages these! More comparisons between different birthing experiences later.
  • Pajamas — yes I had to buy new ones.
  • Knitting. I’m not kidding. 2×2 ribbed socks with cables down the side for entertainment.
  • Book — Evolution by Stephen Baxter from my Sci Fi list.
  • Pen and paper.
  • Baby clothes — so far, one of N’s old sleepers, a newborn t-shirt, and a baby hat. I feel like I’m missing something. If I finish this baby sweater in time (which I should) that will go in too. Even if it’s ginormous. Socks maybe?
  • Baby blanket.
  • Pads for me. Amazingly I can’t remember how many of these will be needed.
  • Lip balm, also for me. I don’t really know why.
  • Toiletries — what with not using shampoo or deodorant any more, my toiletries bag is really small! Toothbrush, toothpaste, and soap. I need to add a washcloth.
  • Nursing bras and underwear.
  • Carseat is already in the car! (And the Boo is unhappy — we switched the side he was on.)

What’s missing:

  • Newborn disposable diapers — I am not convinced it’s a good idea to take cloth diapers to the hospital.
  • Wipes.
  • Food for me post-delivery. Granola bars, etc.
  • Yoga ball? Not sure if I want to take this again or not.
  • Not sure if I’ll need robe, socks, slippers, etc. I don’t tend to wear those things at home (although I do have them) so not sure if I’ll want them there.
  • Clothes for me for going home — I figure I’ll wear home what I wear there.
  • I’m leaving nursing pillows and all that jazz at home. We won’t be in the hospital long (hopefully just a couple days) and I hate taking miscellaneous crap.
  • Camera! Video camera! What to take and will we remember to charge it?

ETA: Sling! I totally forgot to mention I packed my sling. My organic flannel ring sling, at that. Yum. Not that it will get much use at a hospital.. but still, can’t expect to deliver a baby without a sling in hand :)

List of phone numbers with names of people for H to call-and number of friends for Boo back up!

Your own pillowcase or pillow? Hospital pillows always suck.

Some fancy lotion to make you feel special.

Soap for the baby’s first bath?

We took cloth to the hospital with my son and it worked out fine. We just had a plastic garbage bag to put all the dirty diapers in and made sure all the nurses and the cleaning crew knew to NOT take that bag.
