Twitter-do, twitter-dee

Apparently it’s been almost two weeks since I last posted something. I blame Twitter.

The thing is, Twitter is really working for me. All day long I have these mini-thoughts that I’d like to record, but feel a bit ridiculous doing that on my blog. 140 characters is apparently perfect and I have to stop myself from Twittering all day long.

I also love how connected I am to my friends. Of course I subscribe to my friends’ blogs too, but blog entries are edited. Blog entries are meaningful. Blog entries are writing, not spontaneous living in the moment thoughts and comments.

Right now, I like spontaneous living in the moment thoughts and comments. It fits in with my current lifestyle. I like knowing what my friends are up to without my needing to remember to send someone an email. I like knowing what these folks are doing, thinking, and feel like sharing. I have no problem living vicariously! I also like commiserating with people whom I have things in common. Who doesn’t? I like not being alone. I like finding out my news via Twitter because it’s quick and totally up to me whether I want to learn more or not. I am deeply enjoying the election section of Twitter. I actually sit and knit while watching the comments fly by. So many people are idiots. It’s hilarious!

Of course I don’t plan to abandon the blog. I have posts partially composed or still just ideas stuck in my brain, and I’ll get to them when I can. After all, my primary audience for my blog is me! Stuff I want to remember. Stuff I want to share. That won’t disappear any time soon.

It’s just hard to find time to edit and upload pictures. Hard to find time to write entries. I often write just the titles and a bulleted list of things I want to talk about, and save them, so as to come back to finish writing at another time. Then it needs editing, re-writing, editing again, and possibly publishing, if I don’t think I’m saying something utterly stupid.

Twitter though, I can say something like “We’re getting pumpkins today!” and that’s pretty much all you need to know. I’m excited about pumpkins. End of story.

It’s a good thing :)

When I first heard about Twitter I was highly skeptical. All I do is change diapers all day, who wants to read about that? Turns out it’s a great outlet for random thoughts and ponderings, and sometimes people even answer me. It’s nice.

The one thing about Twitter I dislike? For some folks it seems to be a popularity contest, and that is annoying. What are we, sixth graders? “Follow this person, they’re almost at 100 followers!” Geez. Give me a break. That’s no way to encourage meaningful relationships. I don’t know about you, but my Twitter list is already going overboard because of the election. I fully expect to scale back those I’m following once that’s over (particularly the news twitters — good for now, going to drive me nuts later).

In any case — if you’re on Twitter and I’m not already on your list, let me know! I’d love to know what you’re up to. If you aren’t on Twitter, then perhaps you should be. Random brain dumps are good for the soul :)
